Case Studies

Case study sites introduction

As part of the Performance, Learning and 'Heritage' research, we undertook a case study approach to documenting and investigating current performance practice. The four case studies chosen were approached individually and with respect to their differences, at the same time as we collected data that could be compared in a useful, comprehensive manner.

The first of these case study sites was National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, where data collection took place in October 2005. For more information about data collected and how it was analysed, please visit the following link:

The second was Llancaiach Fawr Manor in Caerphilly, a 16th Century Manor House with a daily programme of live interpretation. Data collection took place in February/March 2006. For more information about research at this site click on the icon on the right.

Our third case study involved looking at the relationship between a museum and theatre company, The Herbert and Triangle Theatre in Coventry. For more information about this case study, click on the icon on the right.

Case study four consisted of an experimental commission at Manchester Museum. For details of this case study, designed to test and build upon emerging findings from case studies outlined above, click on the icon on the right.

Illustrating Practice

Alongside the four specified case studies, and the mapping exercise that took place over the course of the project, the research team also looked at a further selection of sites and organisations of specific interest. This enabled us to complement the case study research, and to provide a broader cross-section of current activity within the field. The examples (detailed on the left) represent various key points of the spectrum of museum theatre and live interpretation and/or examples of innovative practice. No guarantee of quality is conferred by inclusion; and no value judgement is implied for sites or organisations not included.
